Days 86-87: Volcan Isla

Days: 86-87  -   Date: 18-19NOV13  -   Itinerary: Granda to Ometepe Island, NI  -   Miles: 71

I said goodbye (for now) to Rene and Jackie this morning. They are heading into Costa Rica today and I’m going to Ometepe Island. We’re on the same Stahlratte sailing from Panama to Colombia, so I’ll see them again in about 3 weeks.

A short ride later and I made it to the ferry port that goes to Ometepe.. only I had just missed the boat, so I had to wait another 1.5 hours for the next sailing. No big deal.. I hung out and chatted with some other long-term travelers for a while.

Ometepe Isla which was formed by 2 volcanoes in the middle of Lake Nicaragua

Once on Ometepe, I rode straight to the hostel I had read about a few days earlier. It’s a tranquillo type of place that’s about 1km from the main town on the island. It’s called Hospedaje Soma and I recommend it if you’re visiting this place.

The next day, I was up early for breakfast and then out to ride around the Volcan Isla a bit before I got hot. I unloaded all the gear and panniers from the moto in an effort to lighten it up and enjoy the ride a bit more.

The road around the main island is about half paved and half dirt.

A few GoPro photos from ‘fun’ part of the ride:

Yup, it’s true.. riding the moto on a volcanic island:

The road around the island goes right across the middle of Ometepe airstrip. I don’t think it’s used very often.. maybe only for emergencies?Nic_19Nov13_005 Nic_19Nov13_Panorama_1

The ride only took about 2 hours and I was back by noon. The rest of the day I worked on the blog and lazed around. I think I need a vacation from this vacation!
