Dust 2 Dawson 2013 – Day 5 – Denali Highway to Anchorage
With sunrise being around 4am, it was another early start for me. The mosquitos were extra affectionate this morning while I was packing my tent up and I made haste to get the hell outta there.. no breakfast for me. Shortly after Tangle Lakes, the highway goes from paved asphalt to dirt. 🙂 It’s an easy dirt road, comprised of packed/graded gravel with the occasional bumpy section.

The Denali Highway is about 135 miles long of which 120 is unpaved. Along the way it crosses over the Maclaren Summit and Susitna river. For the most part, it’s fairly remote with only 2-3 lodges along the entire highway and light traffic.
Once I made it across the highway, I stopped in Cantwell for gas/lunch before rocketing back towards Anchorage and a mostly uneventful last leg of the days ride.

Summary: D2D was a fun biker orientated event and great way to meet other dualsport/ADV riders from around the country and world. The Top of the World Highway and Denali Highway are MUST-DO rides if you come to Alaska.. don’t skip them.
